The Mall of America in Bloomington is embarking on its most significant expansion since opening in 1992, when the initial construction phase carried a $650 million price tag.[4] Triple Five Worldwide kicked off construction work on the $2.5 billion project, which will fundamentally reshape the landscape of Minnesota's most visited tourist attraction.[4] The expansion represents the company's bet that the mall's recovery from pandemic-related disruptions has solidified enough to justify a decade-long capital commitment.
Since its debut three decades ago, the 5.6-million-square-foot mall has undergone more than four major expansion phases, cementing its status as a destination retail and entertainment venue that draws more than 43 million annual visitors.[6] The new project will nearly double the mall's footprint, adding retail spaces, attractions, and amenities designed to appeal to both regional shoppers and the international tourists who have traditionally made the mall a Minnesota pilgrimage.[4] The timing of the expansion coincides with rising visitor numbers from across the Midwest, suggesting that leisure travel and consumer spending patterns have stabilized after years of uncertainty.
The $2.5 billion commitment underscores the mall's role as an economic engine for Bloomington and the broader Twin Cities region. Beyond retail expansion, the project signals Triple Five's confidence in Minnesota as a long-term growth market. Construction work is now underway, with the full buildout expected to take a decade to complete.[4] As the project moves forward, it will likely generate construction jobs and ongoing employment opportunities while reinforcing Bloomington's position as a retail and tourism hub.
