MIAMI — A federal grand jury indicted five South Florida men Thursday in 'Operation Mousetrap,' targeting a cocaine pipeline from Colombia through the Dominican Republic into Miami, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. The operation centered on a luxury high-rise apartment in Midtown Miami, just north of Wynwood along Northwest 36th Street. Authorities seized 536 kilograms of cocaine, 14 firearms including an unserialized AK-47, and $3.1 million in cash during a search of the unit. The defendants include 38-year-old Daniel 'Mickey' Hernandez of Miami, identified as the primary distributor; 45-year-old Frank Gonzalez of Hialeah; 50-year-old Alexander 'Al Biggs' Walker Caraballo of Miami; 33-year-old Jose Luis 'Lil Cuz' Diaz of Miami Gardens; and 42-year-old Humberto 'Kiki' Moreno of Miami. Prosecutors allege the group stored and prepared cocaine for distribution from the Midtown location. Walker and Gonzalez face additional firearms charges tied to drug trafficking, per the DOJ indictment. In a related maritime bust, the USCGC Resolute offloaded 2,570 pounds of cocaine valued at $19.3 million at Base Miami Beach on Thursday, transferring six suspected smugglers to federal authorities, according to a U.S. Coast Guard press release. The contraband resulted from three interdictions in the Caribbean Sea. These seizures come as Wynwood grapples with broader public safety issues, including a recent fatal DUI crash by a Cybertruck driver in Miami-Dade and a surge in foreclosures threatening neighborhood stability. If convicted, the indicted men face mandatory minimums of 10 years in federal prison, with possible life sentences. The Midtown proximity raises concerns for Wynwood's art district, where vibrant nightlife along NW 2nd Avenue intersects with ongoing crime trends like serial burglaries statewide.
