Liu Yan Merges Chinese Traditional Art with Western Imagery

Staff Writer
April 15, 2026

Coral Gables residents are invited to experience a unique artistic fusion as local artist Liu Yan presents her latest collection, which blends traditional Chinese artistic techniques with Western imagery. Yan, who has called the City Beautiful home for over a decade, is known for her intricate brushwork and vibrant use of color, honed through years of studying classical Chinese painting.

Her new series, currently on display at the Coral Gables Museum on Salzedo Street amid the Mediterranean-inspired architecture of downtown Coral Gables, features landscapes and portraits that subtly incorporate elements often found in Western art, such as perspective and chiaroscuro, while maintaining the philosophical depth characteristic of Chinese art. One notable piece, "Gables Sunset," depicts the iconic Biltmore Hotel bathed in the warm hues of a South Florida evening, rendered with the delicate brushstrokes typically seen in traditional Chinese ink wash paintings.

Yan, who previously taught art classes at the Coral Gables Art Center, expressed her excitement about sharing this new direction in her work with the community. "I believe art is a bridge between cultures," Yan stated during a recent preview. "My goal is to create something beautiful and thought-provoking that resonates with both my heritage and my life here in Coral Gables."

The exhibition has already drawn positive attention from local art enthusiasts and critics alike. Dr. Eleanor Vance, a professor of art history at the University of Miami, commented on Yan's ability to "seamlessly weave together disparate artistic traditions into a cohesive and compelling narrative."

The collection will be open to the public at the Coral Gables Museum until May 25, 2026. The museum is located at 285 Aragon Avenue and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Admission details can be found on the museum's website or by calling their main office.
