Little Rock Expands Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure
The city of Little Rock is significantly expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, adding 30 new charging stations across the city. These stations will be strategically located in public parks, near community centers, and in downtown parking garages to maximize convenience for both residents and visitors. The expansion addresses growing concerns about 'range anxiety' amongst EV drivers and aims to support the city's sustainability goals.
The project is funded through a combination of $500,000 in city infrastructure bonds and a $250,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The new charging stations will include a mix of Level 2 chargers, suitable for topping off batteries while shopping or dining, and faster DC fast chargers which can provide a significant charge in under an hour.
City officials are optimistic about the project's impact. 'This investment demonstrates our commitment to a greener future and makes Little Rock a more attractive place for EV owners,' said a statement released by the Mayor's office. 'By making it easier to charge electric vehicles, we hope to see more residents switch to cleaner transportation options, improving air quality and reducing our carbon footprint.'
The charging stations will be managed by a third-party provider that will handle maintenance and billing. Users will be able to pay for charging sessions through a mobile app or with a credit card at the station. The city is also exploring partnerships with local businesses to offer discounts and incentives for EV drivers.
The new charging stations are expected to be operational by the end of the year, marking a significant step in Little Rock's effort to become a more sustainable and environmentally friendly city.
