Little River K-8 Bolsters Security Amid Wynwood Safety Fears
National Desk
May 10, 2026
Little River K-8 School, located at the edge of Wynwood near NW 2nd Avenue and 79th Street, announced plans Friday to install 20 high-definition surveillance cameras and 1,200 linear feet of 8-foot chain-link fencing with barbed wire toppings. Miami-Dade County Public Schools district spokesperson Rachel Rodriguez confirmed the $450,000 project, funded through the district's safety grant program, will begin installation next week and finish by June 15. The move responds to a series of incidents in Wynwood, including three reported burglaries and two assaults near the school perimeter since March, per Miami Police Department logs.
Principal Maria Gonzalez stated in a letter to parents obtained from the school's public records portal, 'Our top priority is the safety of our 650 students and staff. These enhancements will deter unauthorized access and provide real-time monitoring linked to MPD's dispatch center.' The upgrades include motion-sensor lighting along NW 79th Street and integration with the county's emergency alert system. Parents like Wynwood resident Carla Mendes praised the initiative, saying it addresses 'growing worries from late-night disturbances near the Wynwood Walls.'
The enhancements align with Florida's broader push for school safety amid rising urban violence, including a recent Orlando nightclub shooting that left three dead. Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Jesus Jové referenced Gov. Ron DeSantis-signed HB 1461, the new education accountability bill tying funding to performance metrics, which includes provisions for security audits. Locally, this follows Miami-Dade Police reports of a 12% uptick in neighborhood crimes in District 2, encompassing Wynwood, since January.
Wynwood residents, familiar with the area's evolution from warehouse district to arts hub bounded by I-95 and North Miami Avenue, note the school's proximity to high-traffic spots like the Wynwood Marketplace. While no incidents occurred on campus, community meetings at the Joseph Cellars Neighborhood Center last month highlighted safety as a top concern. Miami Commissioner Keon Hardemon's office issued a statement supporting the project, linking it to city investments in lighting along NW 2nd Avenue.
This comes as Florida grapples with public safety challenges, including a boat explosion injuring 15 at Miami Beach and a $10 million fraud bust in Miami-Dade yielding 12 arrests. Yet, economic resilience persists with unemployment at 2.8%, bolstering funding for such initiatives. School officials urge parents to use the Miami-Dade Schools app for live camera feeds post-installation.
