Lee County Fire Department Secures New Equipment
The Lee County Fire Department recently announced the acquisition of several new pieces of equipment aimed at enhancing public safety and response capabilities across the county. The new additions include a state-of-the-art ladder truck, two advanced rescue vehicles, and updated personal protective equipment for all active firefighters.
According to a statement released by the department, the ladder truck will be stationed at the main firehouse on Main Street in Opelika, significantly improving response times to multi-story structures in downtown Opelika and surrounding areas. The rescue vehicles are slated for deployment to substations in the northern parts of the county around Auburn and the southern parts near Smiths Station, ensuring broader coverage for accident scenes and medical emergencies.
Funding for the new equipment came from a combination of county budget allocations and a federal grant secured last year. The total cost of the new apparatus and gear was approximately $2.3 million. Fire Chief Robert Jenkins expressed his gratitude for the community's support and the county commission's commitment to public safety, stating, "These investments are crucial for our firefighters to perform their duties effectively and, most importantly, to keep our residents safe."
The department anticipates the new equipment will be fully operational by early June, following necessary training for personnel. Residents may see the new vehicles during training exercises over the coming weeks.
