Town of Huntington Completes Major Reconstruction of 42-Year-Old Crab Meadow Golf Course Irrigation System

Huntington, NY – The Town of Huntington has announced the completion of a significant reconstruction project for the irrigation system at Crab Meadow Golf Course, benefiting residents from Hauppauge and surrounding communities. This upgrade aims to ensure the course maintains its pristine condition while also conserving vital water resources.

The original irrigation system, installed in 1982, had become increasingly problematic, suffering from frequent failures, inefficiencies, and escalating maintenance costs. These issues often led to turf damage, considerable water wastage, and higher operational expenses for the Town.

Supervisor Ed Smyth commented on the project, stating, “The comprehensive reconstruction of the Crab Meadow Golf Course irrigation system marks a significant investment in the Town’s recreational assets. This upgrade not only enhances the beauty and playability of the course but also ensures responsible water usage, aligning with our commitment to sustainability.”

The project was executed in two distinct phases, with the second phase reaching completion in April 2024. Phase 1, finalized in 2022, concentrated on the back nine holes. This involved the replacement of approximately 22,000 linear feet of mainline piping, the installation of 1,100 new sprinkler heads, and an upgrade to the pump station, which now includes variable frequency drives for more efficient water management.

Phase 2, which concluded last month, addressed the front nine holes. This phase saw the replacement of approximately 20,000 linear feet of mainline piping and the installation of 1,000 new sprinkler heads. Both phases were strategically planned and completed during the off-season to minimize any disruption to golf course operations, ensuring the course remained open for play during peak months with convenient access via the Sunken Meadow Parkway.

Councilman Sal Ferro, who serves as Liaison to the Department of Parks and Recreation, added, “The completion of this project demonstrates the Town’s commitment to providing top-notch facilities for our residents. The new irrigation system will significantly improve the playing experience at Crab Meadow while also reducing our environmental footprint.”

The newly reconstructed irrigation system is anticipated to deliver several key benefits, including improved water efficiency through modern, water-saving technology, which will reduce consumption and waste. It is also expected to lead to reduced maintenance costs due to more reliable infrastructure, and enhanced turf health from uniform and precise irrigation, improving the course's overall appearance and playability. Furthermore, the Town highlights the environmental sustainability aspect, noting that more efficient water use will reduce its environmental impact and conserve valuable resources.

The Town of Huntington emphasizes its dedication to offering high-quality recreational facilities to its residents, including those in the bustling hamlet of Hauppauge, while prioritizing environmental sustainability. The Crab Meadow Golf Course irrigation system reconstruction stands as a prime example of this commitment, aiming to keep the course a premier destination for golfers from Hauppauge and beyond for many years to come.
