Gamecocks Reload: South Carolina Women's Basketball Navigates Portal Season

National Desk
May 2, 2026
South Carolina's women's basketball program wasted no time pivoting to the transfer market after the Gamecocks fell short of a fourth national title. The portal opened April 6, the day after Staley and the Gamecocks' loss to UCLA in the national championship game, and will remain open through April 20. Jordan Lee, a standout guard from Texas and one of the best players available in the portal, committed to the Gamecocks, giving Staley immediate reinforcement at a critical position. Beyond Lee, the program has aggressively recruited top talent. Five-star forward Oliviyah Edwards, one of the best recruits in the Class of 2026, visited South Carolina on Tuesday and was spotted with Staley and the team at USC's baseball game that day, according to reporting by the Greenville News. Edwards, who has also scheduled a visit to Louisville, represents another high-profile get for a program still contending after back-to-back national championships. Staley's recruiting efforts extend beyond traditional transfers. Virginia point guard Kymora Johnson, who played at Staley's alma mater, visited South Carolina last week as the program reconnected with portal players from top programs. The activity signals Staley's continued determination to reload quickly despite the heartbreak of missing out on a fourth title. Remarkably, the program has maintained unusual roster stability in recent years, with zero players from the three-time national champions entering the transfer portal. That consistency has been a hallmark of Staley's tenure, but the loss to UCLA has prompted calculated moves to strengthen the roster for the upcoming season.
