Gale Warning Issued: Mariners Advised to Seek Safe Harbor Off Virginia Coast

Mariners operating in waters from Cape Charles Light to the Virginia-North Carolina Border, 20 to 60 nautical miles offshore, are advised to alter plans and seek safe harbor due to a Gale Warning issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Wakefield VA.

The warning is effective immediately, September 23, 2026, at 9:04 PM EDT, and remains in effect until 6:00 PM EDT on Friday, September 25, 2026. Northeast winds of 30 to 35 knots, with gusts up to 45 knots, are expected, alongside hazardous seas reaching 14 to 19 feet.

These severe conditions pose a significant risk, including the potential for vessel capsizing or damage and reduced visibility. The NWS advises all mariners to remain in port, seek safe harbor, alter course, and/or secure their vessels to prepare for these hazardous conditions.
