Coastal Flood Warning, High Surf Advisory, and Rip Current Risk for Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach residents are advised to take immediate action to protect flood-prone property as a Coastal Flood Warning, High Surf Advisory, and Beach Hazards Statement are now in effect. The National Weather Service (NWS) Wakefield VA issued these alerts tonight, September 23, at 8:08 PM EDT.

The Coastal Flood Warning is effective until 4 AM EDT Friday, September 24. Expect two to three feet of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. This widespread flooding poses an elevated threat of property damage and will likely close numerous roads, threatening homes and businesses. Water depths may be sufficient to close roads and flood vehicles, extending inland along tidal rivers and bays. If travel is required, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.

A High Surf Advisory is in place until 6 PM EDT Thursday, September 24, with large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet expected in the surf zone. Concurrently, a Beach Hazards Statement, indicating a high risk of rip currents, remains in effect through Thursday evening. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to these dangerous surf conditions and to avoid hazardous swimming conditions.
