Gale Warning: Hazardous Conditions for Coastal Waters Off Virginia

Mariners are advised to alter plans and avoid hazardous conditions in coastal waters from Cape Charles Light to the Virginia-North Carolina border out 20 nautical miles. A Gale Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service Wakefield VA.

This warning is effective from 1 AM EDT Wednesday, September 23, until 7 AM EDT Friday, September 25. Northeast winds are expected to reach 25 to 35 knots, with gusts up to 45 knots. Seas are forecast to be 10 to 14 feet.

A Small Craft Advisory is also in effect for the same area until 1 AM EDT Wednesday, with east to northeast winds 20 to 25 knots and gusts up to 30 knots, and seas 6 to 9 feet.

The National Weather Service states that strong winds will cause hazardous seas, which could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility. Mariners should remain in port, seek safe harbor, alter course, and/or secure their vessels for these hazardous conditions.
