Coastal Flood Warning, High Surf, Rip Current Risk for Eastern Currituck

Residents and visitors in Eastern Currituck are advised to take protective measures against expected coastal flooding and dangerous surf conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) Wakefield VA has issued a combination of alerts effective immediately.

A Coastal Flood Warning is in effect from 11 AM Wednesday to 4 AM EDT Friday, September 25th. One to three feet of inundation above ground level is expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Numerous roads may be closed, and low-lying property, including homes and businesses, may be inundated. Property owners in flood-prone areas should take necessary actions to protect their property.

A High Surf Advisory is also in effect until 6 PM EDT Thursday, September 24th, with large breaking waves of 9 to 13 feet expected in the surf zone. A Beach Hazards Statement, indicating a high risk of rip currents, is in effect through Wednesday evening, September 24th. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions and the rip current risk. Do not enter the water.

If travel is required, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Some shoreline erosion may occur.
