Fort Lauderdale Police Urge Caution for Holiday Drivers

Staff Writer
April 16, 2026

As Fort Lauderdale residents prepare for upcoming holiday celebrations, the Fort Lauderdale Police Department (FLPD) is reminding drivers to prioritize safety on the roads. With increased traffic expected, particularly on major thoroughfares like Federal Highway and the historic Las Olas Boulevard, officers are emphasizing vigilance and responsible driving habits.

FLPD spokesperson Officer Alice Jenkins stated, "We want everyone to enjoy their holidays, and that starts with arriving safely at their destinations. We'll have an increased presence on the roads to help ensure smooth traffic flow and to deter dangerous driving behaviors."

Key safety tips highlighted by the FLPD include:

  • Designate a sober driver: If your holiday plans involve alcohol, make arrangements for a designated driver, use ride-sharing services, or public transportation.
  • Eliminate distractions: Put away cell phones and avoid other activities that take your attention away from the road.
  • Buckle up: Ensure all occupants, front and back, are wearing seatbelts.
  • Plan your route: Anticipate potential traffic delays and allow extra travel time, especially when heading to popular spots like the iconic Fort Lauderdale Beach or the picturesque Riverwalk area.
  • Maintain a safe following distance: Give yourself ample space between your vehicle and the one in front of you.
  • Be aware of pedestrians and cyclists: With more people out and about, especially in downtown areas, drivers should be extra cautious.

The FLPD will be conducting targeted enforcement efforts throughout the holiday period, focusing on impaired driving, speeding, and distracted driving. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious or dangerous driving to the non-emergency line at 954-764-4357 or, in emergencies, by calling 911.

"Let's all do our part to make this a safe and happy holiday season for everyone in Fort Lauderdale," Officer Jenkins added. "A little extra caution can prevent a lot of heartache."
