Florida Spring Break Draws Record Crowds, Fuels Tourism Boom
National Desk
May 4, 2026
Florida's tourism sector roared into 2026 with record spring break crowds, boosting hotel occupancies and revenues across South Florida and the Gulf Coast. In Miami-Dade County, more than 80% of hotel rooms were occupied in January, the highest rate among the 25 largest U.S. metro areas, with average daily rates hitting $288—second only to San Francisco.[1][4] Miami Beach bookings jumped 38% for mid-February to mid-April compared to last year, driven by an earlier Easter and enhanced security measures like curfews, which cut arrests 24% and drew more families, said Miami Beach Commissioner Alex Fernandez.[5][4]
Pinellas County, home to St. Pete-Clearwater beaches, marked historic highs with its highest-ever hotel bed tax collections for January and February 2026, rebounding from 2024 hurricanes.[2][3] Visit St. Pete Clearwater reported sustained growth from 2025's nearly 15 million overnight visitors, who generated over $10 billion in economic impact, supporting thousands of jobs in hospitality and retail.[2] Statewide, tourism created nearly 350,000 jobs in Southeast Florida alone, with Orlando and Tampa ranking in the top 10 U.S. metros for occupancy.[1]
The surge builds on 2025's record 143.3 million visitors, up 0.2%, including 131.1 million domestic travelers who arrived mostly by car or train.[1][6] Canadians led international visitors at 2.9 million (down 14.7% from 2024), followed by surging Brazilians (1.3 million, up 10.4%) and Britons (1.2 million, up 6%).[1] Gov. Ron DeSantis hailed Florida as 'the nation’s top tourist destination,' citing the fourth quarter's 33.5 million visitors, up 0.6%.[1][6]
Industry leaders anticipate further highs from cold northern weather and seven FIFA World Cup matches at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens this summer, including four group-stage games.[1][4] Local businesses from Fort Lauderdale to Palm Beach—where rates averaged $341—report thriving as spring break spending offsets slight dips in airport arrivals.[1]
