Everglades Wildfire Smoke Drifts Toward Wynwood

National Desk
May 11, 2026
MIAMI — A raging wildfire known as the Highway 41 Fire, burning in the northeastern corner of Everglades National Park south of U.S. Route 41 (Tamiami Trail) and east of Shark Valley, has grown to 9,151 acres as of the latest National Park Service report. Flames are visible from Tamiami Trail and Florida's Turnpike, with thick black smoke plumes shifting due to changing winds. U.S. Wildland Fire Services and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue are deploying planes, helicopters and ground crews, but containment stands at just 20%. Northwest winds of 8 to 15 mph are driving the smoke toward populated areas across Miami-Dade and Broward counties, including urban Wynwood along NW 2nd Avenue and the Miami Design District. The National Wildfire Coordinating Group reports the blaze originated south of Highway 41, with no immediate threat to structures but potential visibility reductions on major roads like I-75. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokesperson Remy Fernandez stated in a press release that 'individuals with respiratory conditions should limit outdoor activities if smoke impacts their area.' Closures remain in effect within Everglades National Park between the L-67 Canal on the west and L-31 Canal on the east, from U.S. 41 south to north of Mahogany Hammock, affecting parking lots, facilities and waterways, per NPS alerts. Nearby, the Mile Marker 39 Fire and Sawgrass Fire, both at 0% containment per Florida Forest Service, add to regional smoke concerns, with haze detectable on weather radar. This fire comes amid Florida's compounding health and safety challenges, including a measles outbreak spike and severe thunderstorms causing South Florida flooding. As Gov. Ron DeSantis activates $50 million in hurricane prep funds, state resources stretch thin against these environmental threats, echoing national public health shifts like President Trump's Surgeon General nomination. Wynwood residents, already facing soaring insurance costs tied to the state's third-worst foreclosure surge, should monitor air quality via Florida Today wildfire maps for updates.
