From Tinsel To Trash: Don't Be Too Fast!

DUNEDIN – As the holiday season fades further into memory, Dunedin residents are reminded that while the festive decorations may be packed away, the proper disposal of Christmas trees is still a priority. While many trees have already been collected, the city’s Solid Waste Department emphasizes the importance of following guidelines for yard waste pickup, keeping neighborhoods from the historic downtown to the coastal areas pristine.

The city provides curbside collection for live Christmas trees as part of its regular yard waste service. However, there are specific requirements to ensure your tree is picked up efficiently and without issue. Trees must be completely free of all decorations, including tinsel, ornaments, lights, and stands. Any tree with these items still attached will not be collected by the Solid Waste Department.

Residents are also reminded that trees should not be placed in plastic bags. Instead, they should be placed at the curb on the designated yard waste collection day. For those with larger trees, it's recommended to cut them into pieces no longer than four feet in length and no more than six inches in diameter. This helps the collection crews handle the material safely and efficiently.

The city's yard waste collection schedule typically runs once a week. Residents can check the city's official website or their utility bill for their specific collection day. Proper disposal not only helps keep Dunedin clean but also ensures that the trees can be mulched or composted, contributing to the city's environmental efforts in maintaining local parks and trails.

If you have questions regarding yard waste collection or Christmas tree disposal, contact the City of Dunedin Solid Waste Department during regular business hours.
