Driver Ejected, Killed in Head-On SEPTA Trolley Crash in West Philly

Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small reported officers responded to the 5100 block of Lancaster Avenue just before 1:30 a.m. Friday for a collision between a westbound 2014 GMC Acadia SUV and an eastbound SEPTA trolley. The SUV, traveling at high speed, veered into the eastbound lanes, striking the trolley head-on before spinning 180 degrees and ejecting the unidentified 32-year-old driver onto the sidewalk next to the heavily damaged vehicle.[2][4][6] He was pronounced dead at the scene from severe head trauma.
The trolley carried five people including the operator at the time of impact, which knocked it partially off the tracks and caused extensive interior and exterior damage. Two passengers were transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center with complaints of pain but non-life-threatening injuries; the operator and two other passengers were uninjured.[2][4] Lancaster Avenue, a vital artery in West Philadelphia linking University City to Cathedral Park, has seen multiple transit-related incidents amid SEPTA's ongoing Route 10 trolley operations.[2][5]
The Philadelphia Police Department's Crash Investigation Division, alongside SEPTA Police, is reviewing trolley camera footage to determine why the SUV swerved. No other vehicles were involved, and speed appears a factor, though impairment remains under investigation.[2][4][6] This fatality underscores persistent safety concerns on Philadelphia's trolley lines, where high-speed vehicle intrusions have led to prior crashes in the city.[2]
