La Plata County Website Scam Warning | Fake Domain Alert
La Plata County warned residents and vendors May 14 of an active scam in which fraudsters impersonate county employees and use a fake website to solicit payments and alter business records.
Scammers operate a fraudulent domain, lpc-gov.org, which mimics the county's legitimate website, lpcgov.org. While the fake domain redirects to the real site, individuals posing as county staff contact vendors from email addresses ending in @lpc-gov.org. They request payments, purchase orders, shipping address changes, or alterations to vendor payment information.
One name used in the scam is "Adam Keenoy," though other aliases may exist, the county said.
The county reported the fraudulent domain to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and asked the hosting provider to suspend it. The Finance Department notified vendors of the scheme.
Residents and businesses should verify that communications from La Plata County come from @lpcgov.org, not variations with hyphens or alternate spellings. Before clicking links in emails, hover over them to check the actual URL. If you receive a suspicious request involving payments or account changes, contact the county directly at 970-382-6210 or through www.lpcgov.org using verified contact information.
Report fraudulent communications to La Plata County immediately. Do not respond to the sender or provide information.
