Colorado Springs 2C Paving Kicks Off as Cache la Poudre Bridge Closes

National Desk
April 19, 2026
The 2C Road Improvements program, funded by a 2015 voter-approved sales tax increase, began its 2026 paving season as temperatures rose, targeting worn arterials across Colorado Springs. Crews started work on multiple segments, including a 1.5-mile repave of Woodmen Road between Olga Wilson Way near Sam's Club and East Rockrimmon Boulevard, with overnight operations from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. to minimize daytime disruptions. At least one lane remains open in each direction, with completion eyed in three to five weeks.[1][3][6] Simultaneously, the Cache la Poudre Street Bridge over Monument Creek—a vital link in the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail network—closed completely on April 20 for major rehabilitation. The project repairs the aging bridge deck, widens the structure and temporarily severs the most direct route to the I-25 pedestrian bridge, affecting cyclists, pedestrians and drivers headed to Monument Valley Park. Closures began earlier in April with the Mesa Road underpass on the Pikes Peak Greenway's east side, as crews work in the creek bed; full updates are posted at coloradosprings.gov/cachelapoudrebridge.[2][4] Separate bridge repairs on Woodmen Road over Academy Boulevard, built in 2011, kicked off with $2.7 million from Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority sales tax revenue. This includes resurfacing, concrete upgrades and new pavement markings on ramps, set for three-month completion primarily overnight. The PPRTA funds such maintenance alongside 2C's broader asphalt milling, overlays and chip seals to preserve the city's 2,800 miles of roadways.[1][7] These efforts underscore Colorado Springs' push to combat infrastructure wear from heavy Pikes Peak traffic, with the 2C program—renewed by voters—prioritizing existing roads over expansions for safer, longer-lasting travel.[3][5]
