San Bernardino County Accepting Civil Grand Jury Applications Through July 31, 2026
San Bernardino County residents interested in serving their community—from the mountains to the desert—are encouraged to apply for the 2027 Civil Grand Jury. Applications are currently being accepted and will close on July 31, 2026, for terms beginning January 1, 2027, and concluding December 31, 2027.
The Civil Grand Jury, an agency of the Superior Court of California, San Bernardino County, operates independently to investigate various aspects of the county, including cities and special districts. This includes potentially hearing information on certain criminal investigations, as mandated by California Penal Code Sections 888 through 939.91. All communications and complaints received by the grand jury are handled with the highest level of confidentiality, with the exception of information deemed feasible for inclusion in the final report.
According to San Bernardino County Superior Court Executive Officer Anabel Romero, grand juror service typically involves an average of three to five full working days per week. Jurors receive compensation of $60 per day, along with appropriate mileage reimbursement. Regular grand jury meetings are held in San Bernardino, the county seat at the foot of the San Bernardino Mountains.
To be eligible for selection, applicants must meet several criteria: they must be at least 18 years of age, a United States citizen, and a resident of San Bernardino County for at least one year prior to appointment. Additional requirements include sufficient knowledge of the English language, possession of natural faculties, ordinary intelligence, sound judgment, and good character. It is important to note that elected public officials are not eligible to serve as grand jurors.
Interested citizens can apply online. The application deadline is July 31. A recruitment timeline with important dates and information is also available for review. For further questions, residents can visit the grand jury’s website or contact the grand jury coordinator at 909-382-3971.
