Why it matters locally: Food safety and public health are concerns for Pennsylvania policymakers, food producers, and restaurant owners as they seek to minimize illness and maintain consumer trust. The state's agricultural sector, along with its numerous restaurants and food processing facilities, will likely pay close attention to the CDC's findings and recommendations.

Atlanta, GA – Approximately 48 million people in the United States contract illnesses from contaminated food annually, according to new data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC report, published recently, details the extent of foodborne diseases and their impact on the nation's health. The government agency estimates that among those affected by foodborne illnesses, roughly 128,000 require hospitalization each year. Furthermore, the CDC reports that approximately 3,000 deaths annually are attributed to these diseases. Foodborne illnesses, often referred to as food poisoning, can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites that contaminate food. Symptoms can range from mild gastrointestinal discomfort to severe and life-threatening conditions.
