April 26, 2026
Bismarck police arrested a 25-year-old male suspect late Saturday in connection with a targeted shooting near the state capitol, injuring one person who remains in stable condition at a local hospital. The incident unfolded in downtown Bismarck, a bustling area close to government buildings and popular eateries like Peacock Alley, initially reported by the Bismarck Tribune. Authorities described the shooting as targeted, with no ongoing threat to the public, though specifics on the motive or victim identity were withheld pending further investigation.[1]
The suspect, whose name has not been released, was apprehended without incident blocks from the scene near East Divide Avenue. Bismarck Police Department spokesperson Lt. Eric Braided confirmed the arrest via a Sunday morning press release, noting the injured victim, a 32-year-old local resident, sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to the leg. This marks the second shooting incident near the capitol grounds in 2026, following a January parking lot reckless endangerment case involving a 23-year-old Bismarck man for whom an arrest warrant was issued.[3]
Burleigh County State's Attorney Julie Lawyer indicated charges of aggravated assault and reckless endangerment are forthcoming, with the suspect held at Burleigh Morton Detention Center on $100,000 bond. The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation is assisting, reviewing body camera footage and witness statements from the crowded Saturday night district. Local leaders, including Bismarck Mayor Mike Schmitz, urged residents to remain vigilant amid a 15% uptick in firearms-related calls this year compared to 2025.
As the investigation continues, community members gathered at First Presbyterian Church Sunday for prayers, highlighting Bismarck's tight-knit response to violence in the state capital of 75,000. Police Chief Randy Ziegler emphasized community partnerships, including recent funding for additional patrols from the North Dakota Peace Officer's Association.
