Baker’s “lonely fire station” serves a critical lifeline along the I-15
Deep in the Mojave Desert, where the I-15 stretches across one of California's most remote landscapes, San Bernardino County Fire Station 53 in Baker stands as a vital outpost. This station is responsible for more than 5,000 square miles of open desert and federal land, including a segment of one of the nation's busiest corridors.
More than 220,000 vehicles traverse the I-15 daily. When incidents occur, such as semi-truck fires, traffic collisions, or travelers stranded in 105-degree heat, emergency response can be over an hour away. This reality underscores the critical role Station 53 plays in ensuring public safety in this challenging environment.
The desert, while beautiful, can be deadly for those unprepared. San Bernardino County Fire urges all travelers using the I-15 or I-40 corridors to take precautions. Essential safety tips include packing ample water, maintaining a gas tank or EV battery above 50 percent, carrying a phone charger, and informing someone of your route and expected arrival time.
