Council puts focus on motorcycle awareness
Albert Lea Council Proclaims May as Motorcycle Awareness Month
Albert Lea, MN – The Albert Lea City Council officially proclaimed May as Motorcycle Awareness Month during its April 27 meeting, aiming to highlight the critical importance of road safety for motorcyclists and drivers alike. Mayor Rich Murray joined members of the local Flatlanders chapter of American Bikers Aimed Toward Education (A.B.A.T.E.) to advocate for rider safety and education.
The proclamation comes as Minnesota roads have already seen three motorcyclist fatalities this year. To prevent further tragedies, the initiative emphasizes a shared responsibility between riders and drivers to prioritize safety.
Drivers are urged to always look twice for motorcycles, particularly at intersections and when making turns. This simple action can significantly reduce the risk of accidents involving motorcycles, which are often less visible than other vehicles.
Motorcyclists are encouraged to take proactive steps to ensure their own safety. This includes wearing high-visibility protective gear, riding at speeds appropriate for their skill level, and enhancing their riding abilities through training courses. These measures can help riders be seen more easily and react effectively to road conditions and other traffic in areas like those surrounding Lake Albert Lea.
For residents seeking additional safety information and tips, resources are available through the Toward Zero Deaths website.
