Abused Pitbull Puppy Shelly Rescued from Flagler Ditch Amid Probe

April 16, 2026
Rescuers with the Saving Missing Animals Response Team (SMART) discovered the weak Pitbull puppy, now named Shelly, curled up and immobile in a muddy ditch at Shell Bluff Park in Flagler County last week. Covered in flies and maggots, she suffered severe systemic infections, open oozing wounds and cuts across her body after enduring days of heavy rainfall. 'She was found not even able to pick up her head. She wasn't able to walk or move; she was almost on her death bed,' said SMART volunteer Dr. Erka Equizi.[1]
SMART volunteers rushed Shelly at dawn to East Coast Animal Hospital in Flagler County, where veterinarians provided around-the-clock treatment to stabilize her, clean wounds and manage pain. Though her condition is now stable, recovery will be lengthy and expensive, with ongoing care needed for her extensive injuries. An online donation campaign by SMART is covering mounting medical bills as the young pup begins her long road back.[1]
The Flagler County Sheriff's Office launched a criminal investigation, suspecting Shelly was abused and possibly used as a 'bait dog' in illegal animal fighting rings common in parts of Florida. Sheriff Rick Staly vowed to speak for the voiceless pup: 'This animal cannot talk, it cannot tell us who did this or what happened to it so we have to be this dog's voice.' Investigators urge tips on suspicious activity near Shell Bluff Park or anyone recognizing Shelly to call 386-313-4911, referencing case 26-34418, or Crime Stoppers anonymously.[1]
Flagler County, nestled along Florida's northeast coast between Daytona Beach and St. Augustine, has seen recent heavy rains exacerbate local flooding risks, leaving ditches like the one at Shell Bluff Park treacherous. The case highlights persistent animal cruelty issues in the region, with SMART and sheriff's deputies collaborating to bring justice and aid other strays.[1]
