Strong Thunderstorm Threatens Curry, Roosevelt Counties
A Special Weather Statement has been issued for Curry and Roosevelt Counties until 7:00 PM MDT due to a strong thunderstorm bringing wind gusts up to 50 mph and frequent lightning. Seek immediate shelter.
Residents in Curry and Roosevelt Counties, especially in rural southwestern Curry and northwestern Roosevelt, are advised to monitor weather conditions closely due to a strong thunderstorm. The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Special Weather Statement, effective until 7:00 PM MDT tonight, September 29, 2026.
At 6:28 PM MDT, Doppler radar detected a strong thunderstorm 18 miles southeast of Tolar, moving northeast at 25 mph. This storm poses a hazard of wind gusts up to 50 mph, which could cause unsecured objects to blow around and tree limbs to fall. Highway 60 between Mile Markers 352 and 361 is included in the affected area.
Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is also occurring with this storm. For your safety, seek immediate shelter inside a sturdy building or vehicle. Remember that lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Stay alert and prioritize your safety until the storm passes.
