Strong Thunderstorm Threatens Roosevelt, De Baca, Chaves Counties
A strong thunderstorm with 50-55 mph winds and pea-sized hail is impacting Roosevelt, De Baca, and Chaves Counties until 7:45 PM MDT, with potential for flash flooding.
A Special Weather Statement has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Albuquerque NM for parts of Roosevelt, De Baca, and Chaves Counties, effective until 7:45 PM MDT tonight, September 29, 2026.
Residents in rural areas of southeastern De Baca, west central Roosevelt, and north central Chaves Counties should be aware of a strong thunderstorm. At 7:15 PM MDT, Doppler radar indicated a storm 16 miles north of Elkins, moving northeast at 35 mph. This storm is capable of producing wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph and pea-sized hail.
The NWS advises that gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor damage to outdoor objects is possible. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm, which may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.
