Polk County residents can explore the rich histories, cultures and contributions of people with roots in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America during National Hispanic Heritage Month. The annual observance runs from September 15 to October 15.
Hispanic culture and immigration have significantly shaped Polk County's economy. Spanish explorers introduced cattle and citrus to Florida, laying the groundwork for the state's ranches and citrus groves, some of which still thrive near Polk City. These settlers also brought honeybees in 1565, vital to local agriculture for honey production and crop pollination. In 1895, approximately 200 Cubans settled near Fort Meade, cultivating tobacco and demonstrating the impact of Hispanic knowledge and labor on the region's agricultural development.
Community events celebrate Hispanic heritage. On September 19, Polk County Parks and Natural Resources hosted the 19th annual Hispanic Heritage Festival at Lake Gwyn Park in Winter Haven. The festival featured live music, dancing, cultural performances, food and activities for all ages, with local vendors and community partners sharing traditions.
National Hispanic Heritage Month began as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 and expanded to a month in 1988. The observance begins on September 15, marking the independence anniversaries of several Central American countries. Mexico celebrates its independence on September 16, and Chile on September 18.
