Oldsmar residents have noticed small marker flags appearing along roadways and sidewalks in recent weeks. The city's Distribution & Collection department places these locate flags to mark underground water and sewer lines before any digging begins.
Florida's Sunshine 811 law requires anyone planning to excavate to call 811 first. The city then marks utility lines to prevent damage that can disrupt service, cause costly repairs, or endanger lives. Residents should not remove the flags and must call 811 before digging for any project, from planting a garden to home renovation.
The D&C department maintains nearly 200 miles of water and sewer pipes, 650 fire hydrants, and over 5,000 meters throughout the city.
Residents may also notice sewer cleanout pipes on their properties, typically near the back of homes. These pipes access the lateral line connecting a home to the public sewer system. Keeping cleanouts clear prevents blockages and sewer backups, reducing the need for costly plumbing repairs.
