Non-Emergencies

Non-Emergencies Reporting a Non-Emergency Most of the calls that you and your neighbors place to the Wayne Police Department are for non-emergencies. For example, if you discover that a crime has occurred, such as a burglary or theft but you did not witness the incident and don't know when it happened, you should call the non-emergency line (402) 375-2626 (24 hours a day). You can assist the Wayne Police Department in deterring crime by reporting potential criminal activity BEFORE a crime has been committed or completed. Following are examples of suspicious activity that you should report to the police: Suspicious Persons Going door-to-door in a residential area. Burglars often case an area by simply knocking on doors to see if anyone is home. If a stranger knocks on your door, take the time to check them. If you don't, you may unwittingly be sending a burglar on to continue their search. Non-residents entering a yard. Be wary of strangers you see entering neighbor's property. Try calling your neighbor and then call the police if you're still unsure. Waiting in front of a house. If you see a stranger loitering near a home you know is unoccupied, they may be acting as a lookout for a burglary. Forcing entrance to a home or vehicle. Some burglars are so brazen that a casual observer may assume that someone has simply locked themselves out. Be alert! Suspicious Vehicles Slow moving vehicles. Burglars sometimes look for their target by driving aimlessly about, passing by repeatedly. Parked, occupied vehicles. Burglars also will park their car and strike the home of someone they see leaving. Vans and trucks. Be wary of a large vehicle you've never seen before parked next to a home or in a driveway. Verify that it belongs there. Remember, trust your instincts. If you observe something that just doesn't seem right, follow through. Don't say to yourself, "It's probably nothing and besides, the police are probably too busy to check it out". Actually, police officers would much rather respond to your call and have it result in a false alarm than to miss an opportunity to prevent a crime or apprehend a criminal.

Help Solve Crime

The citizens of Wayne are truly the eyes and ears of the Wayne Police Department. While police officers engage the investigation and apprehension of criminal offenders we can't do our job without the help of you, the public we serve. If you see something suspicious in your neighborhood, please report it. You may be preventing a neighbor, or even yourself, from becoming the victim of a crime. Wayne enjoys a relatively low crime rate, as compared to the other First Class Cities in Nebraska, but we are not immune. The best way to keep our community crime free is the active cooperation of the citizens and the police department. If you see a crime report it immediately. If you are the victim of a crime, report it. We can't keep an accurate record of our crime rate if the crimes go unreported. If you hear a rumor that you think may help solve a crime call us. It is our job to discern if the rumor is just that or if the information is relevant to an investigation. For us to keep our crime rate low we must work as a team. We'll do our part, please do yours. To report a crime or to give information you can call the Wayne Police Department at 375-2626 or call Nebraska CrimeStoppers at 1-800-422-1494.

Anonymous Tips

Nebraska CrimeStoppers CrimeStoppers is a program that is used throughout the United States and other countries. It's basic purpose is to provide a network to allow crime-solving tips from the public to be forwarded to Law Enforcement authorities. This network is setup in such a way to allow the caller to remain completely anonymous, which encourages people to report illegal activity. It also allows for cash rewards to be paid to citizens who report illegal activity to the police. This also encourages people to call in tips. Nebraska CrimeStoppers started the program in 1989. A board consisting of citizens at large, law enforcement officers, and members of the media governs it. When someone calls the Nebraska CrimeStoppers toll free number (1-800-422-1494) they speak with a Nebraska State Patrol dispatcher. The caller is assigned a confidential identity number in order to allow them to remain completely anonymous. The Information is forwarded to the Nebraska CrimeStoppers coordinator. The information is immediately relayed to the to the Wayne Police Department if the information received pertains to a Wayne criminal investigation. The Wayne Police Department and the Nebraska State Patrol encourage the use of this program in order to promote public safety in our community and across the state. This is a highly successful program all over the country and many crimes are solved by its use. Remember, Call 1-800-422-1494 to report information that could lead to the solving of a crime or the whereabouts of wanted persons. Remain completely anonymous and be eligible to collect cash rewards up to $1,000.00.

9-1-1 Center

9-1-1 Center When Should I Use 911? Perhaps the most important thing to remember about 911 is when to use it. It is not meant to be used to contact the Police Department about routine matters. 911 is solely used to report emergencies. What is an Emergency? An emergency is when IMMEDIATE Police, Fire, or Medical assistance is necessary to protect life or property. Call 911: (FOR EMERGENCIES ONLY) - To report a fire - To save a life and for all medical emergencies - To stop a crime in progress or report one that has just occurred Call (402)375-2626: (DO NOT CALL 911) - When a crime has already occurred and the offenders are no longer on scene - For nuisance calls (e.g. barking dogs, landscape and construction noise) - To obtain information from the Police Department - To speak with an officer - For non-emergency situations Reporting an Emergency (9-1-1) To obtain the best possible police response, you should be prepared to efficiently report all crime and suspicious activity to the police. Some situations warrant using the 9-1-1 emergency number while others should be phoned in to the 24-hour non-emergency line. The following guidelines are offered to assist you in determining which number to use: A police emergency may be any crime in progress that you are aware of or are observing. A crime that has just been committed against you or one that you just witnessed. For example, you have just had your purse snatched and/or vehicle description may help the police make an apprehension. The 9-1-1 number can be dialed from any telephone and will go directly to the Wayne Police Department's Communication Center. You can also dial 9-1-1 from any coin operated telephone without depositing any money. In order for the police to respond to an emergency, let the dispatcher take control of the conversation. He or she will ask you a series of questions to learn exactly what is taking place. Depending on the type of call, the dispatcher will ask: - What happened? - Where it happened? - Your name, phone number, and location - Suspect(s) description - Weapon, if any - Vehicle, if any, and its direction of travel - Identifiable features of house or building - Pet(s) on premises, if any - Injuries, if any Speak as calmly as you can. In an emergency seconds count. The faster the dispatcher can get the information from you and to an officer the faster your emergency can be dealt with. Remember, even though you are in a hurry each question that you're asked is designed to add a piece to the "picture" so that arriving officers, firemen, or EMS personnel can take precautions for what may be a dangerous situation. The more complete the picture, the quicker and safer the outcome will be for all concerned.
