Butler Community College Celebrates 78th Honors and Awards Ceremony

"Butler Community College Holds 78th Honors and Awards Ceremony jwescott1 Wed, 05/27/2026 - 15:54 Butler Community College held its 78th annual Honors and Awards Recognition Ceremony on Friday, May 15, 2026, recognizing students for academic excellence, leadership and scholarship achievement during the 2025–26 academic year. Nearly $30,000 in scholarship funding was awarded during the ceremony. Students earning Order of the Purple and Order of the Gold honors were recognized during the ceremony. To receive an Order of the Purple designation, students must earn a GPA of 3.75 or higher, while Order of the Gold recipients must attain a 4.0 GPA. Each year, the Butler Community College Education Association’s Master Teacher award winner serves as keynote speaker at Honors and Awards. This year’s Master Teacher, English professor Dr. Andrea McCaffree-Wallace, encouraged students to reflect on their values and recognize the strengths they already possess. “The most important keys to happiness and purpose in life are already inside you, and the most inspiring thing at this ceremony is you,” McCaffree-Wallace said. Forty Butler instructors received Outstanding Faculty certificates, having been nominated by honors students for making the biggest difference in their learning experience. Ten retiring faculty members were also recognized for their contributions to helping students reach their goals. Combined, the retirees have over 200 years of educational service at Butler. Several scholarships and academic recognitions were also awarded during the ceremony. Jaxon Williamson of Augusta received the Winnie L. Broers Scholarship. The Broers scholarship is awarded by the Butler Foundation to a graduating sophomore to attend the University of Kansas or Kansas State University for four semesters. Savannah Wolff of Valley Center received the HUEY (Humankind Understands Educating Youth) Award. The HUEY was established in 1989 in memory of Gregory A. Bales (1965–89). It is given to a distinguished Order of the Purple graduate who possesses high standards for academic and extracurricular activities. Eva Preister of Andale received the Fran Jabara Presidential Business Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a graduating sophomore who plans to study business at Wichita State University. Keegan Yarick of Fort Scott received the Helen Teter Zebold Science Award. The scholarship was founded in 1984 and is given to a student committed to earning a bachelor’s degree in science, math or engineering. Jase Thomas of Augusta received the Crossland Family Presidential Scholarship. Long-time supporters of Pittsburg State University, the Crossland endowed fund supports one student who will attend Pittsburg State following their graduation from Butler. Paige Gawith of Wichita received the Clifford W. Stone Academic Excellence Scholarship. A dedicated supporter of Butler, Clifford Stone was an extraordinary civic leader and generous donor to many scholarships and capital projects, leaving a lasting legacy on the institution. Jacyndah Jennings of Mulvane received the Lindsey Carter Fields Memorial Science Scholarship. America's 250th Celebration Coming to East Park with Bike Parade, Turtle Races & More

Join us for an evening of fun, activities and food!  Those ages 4 to 10 are invited to come to the south end of East Park in the parking lot at 5:15 p.m. to line up for the annual bicycle parade. Be sure to decorate your bicycle in red, white and blue for this patriotic parade that will travel along the sidewalk in East Park. Bring your speediest turtle out for the popular turtle races. Registration begins at 5:45 p.m., with the first heat of races promptly at 6 p.m. Races continue until a winner is crowned. All ages welcome! Turtle Dos and Turtle Don'ts Be sure to stick around for a free hot dog feed, including chips and a drink. Available while supplies last so don't miss out!  Show off your batting skills during the exciting Home Run Derby.  If you need a snack, be sure to stop by and pick up a free bag of popcorn or snowcone! Test out your skills on the inflatable obstacle course! It's always a good time. Be sure to check out the craft stations and more while you are at the park! Have fun with a variety of yard games such as the giant Connect 4, ping pong and basketball!  Businesses, organizations, and community groups are invited to show your American pride with a float! Cash prizes will be awarded: $250 for first place, $100 for second place, and $50 for third place.  Candy and goodies can be distributed by walkers along the curb. Entry deadline is June 22. Wear your sunscreen, and bring your water bottle and chairs. This special parade celebrates America’s special birthday. Spectators should stay on the curb. Do not run toward moving floats to pick up candy. The judges and announcer will be in the 100 block of North Main Street, but every block provides a great view! Check out the parade map for street closures and public parking lots (coming soon). Join us at the Municipal Pool, 900 N. Taylor, for an afternoon of fun at the pool. Bring your lawn chair and beach towel. Concessions will be available. Come out to McDonald Stadium, 298 N. Griffith, for the U.S. Military WarDogs Veterans Ceremony prior to the baseball game. Gates open at 5 p.m. for the ceremony and you can find parking on this map. The ceremony will honor Veterans, Active Duty and First Responders. There will be a presentation of service dogs to Veterans, recognition of a Gold Star family, a flyover, the National Anthem performance, American Legion Riders and more! FREE Celebration of Freedom Veterans shirts will be handed out to Veterans while supplies last. (Limited number of shirts so come early.) Come out to help us say thank you to our Veterans!  View the Parking Map (coming soon) Enjoy an evening of baseball as the U.S. Military WarDogs take on our own El Dorado Walnuts. Enjoy all of the fun of a game of baseball on a summer evening. Concessions will be available, as well as information booths, giveaways and a raffle for Walnuts' signed jerseys and hats. After the baseball game has ended, be sure to stick around for the fireworks show. You can make your way out of the stands onto the field, but stay behind the pitchers mound. As people move down, seating also becomes available in the stands for those just now coming out to the stadium. You can also park at several lots around the area and still get a great view of the show! (The parking lots by the fields behind McDonald Stadium are closed for safety reasons.) Please be respectful of your neighbors when shooting fireworks. Do not discharge fireworks on public property (includes City parks). Do not discharge fireworks on private property, other than your own, without permission from the property owner. Clean up all firework debris from street and curb line. Please allow fireworks to cool before placing in trash carts. Fines for violation of the above include up to $2,500 and/or imprisonment for no more than one year.
