Coastal residents and visitors in Pender and New Hanover Counties are advised of a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Wilmington NC. Dangerous rip currents are expected today, September 26, 2026, from 12:08 PM EDT until 8:00 PM EDT.
These powerful currents can swiftly pull even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper waters. The NWS emphasizes that if caught in a rip current, individuals should relax and float. Do not attempt to swim against the current. If possible, swim parallel to the shoreline. If escape is not possible, face the shore and call or wave for help.
For your safety, swim only near a lifeguard. This alert is effective immediately and covers all coastal areas of Pender and New Hanover Counties.
