Rip Current Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory Issued
A Rip Current Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory are in effect for Coastal Pender and Coastal New Hanover counties until 8 PM and 10 PM EDT tonight, respectively, issued by the NWS Wilmington NC.
URGENT – ACTION REQUIRED: Residents in Coastal Pender and Coastal New Hanover counties should be aware of a Rip Current Statement and a Coastal Flood Advisory in effect today, September 26, 2026.
The National Weather Service (NWS) Wilmington NC has issued a Rip Current Statement until 8:00 PM EDT this evening. Dangerous rip currents are expected. For the Coastal Flood Advisory, up to one foot of inundation above ground level is expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM EDT this evening.
Low-lying roads and locations along the Intracoastal Waterway and adjacent tidal creeks may experience minor coastal flooding. Residents are advised to check with local officials for any road closures or impacts. Rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water.
If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. If swimming, do so near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float, and do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
