Pembroke Pines Schools Offer Healthy Meals Under Federal Rules
Pembroke Pines schools serve students meals that meet federal nutritional standards through the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) sets strict guidelines for these programs. For lunch, meals include fruits, vegetables, grains, meat or meat alternatives, and milk. Students must select at least three components, including a half-cup of fruits and/or vegetables.
Breakfast offerings consist of grains and/or meat/meat alternatives, fruits, and milk. Students must select at least three items, with a minimum of a half-cup of fruits and/or vegetables.
The USDA requires specific daily fruit and vegetable offerings. Fruits can be fresh, frozen, canned, dried, or 100% juice, but juice cannot make up more than half of weekly fruit selections. Schools must also offer vegetables from five subgroups weekly: dark green, red/orange, starchy, other, and beans, peas, and lentils.
Grain requirements state that at least 80% of grains offered weekly must be whole grain-rich. Milk options include at least two choices, with one unflavored. Flavored milk must meet added sugar limits.
The Offer versus Serve provision allows students to decline some food items, aiming to reduce waste and offer flexibility.
