Pembroke Pines Charter Schools Meet Wellness Policy Requirements

Pembroke Pines Charter School System (PPCSS) met all federal and state requirements for its local wellness policy during the 2025-2026 academic year. All seven charter schools achieved full compliance in policy implementation, nutrition guidelines, and food service standards.

The system's commitment to student well-being includes a Local Wellness Policy Advisory Committee. This committee comprises administrators, physical education coaches, advisory board members, community representatives, Chartwells employees, and students. Each campus has a wellness committee liaison ensuring consistent communication and implementation of wellness initiatives.

Nutrition guidelines align with the federal government’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Chartwells, the food service provider, uses a dietary program tool to ensure meals meet required nutrient standards. Lunch meals provide one-third of the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) for essential nutrients, and breakfast meals provide one-quarter.

PPCSS promotes a healthy start to the day through its Universal Free Breakfast program, making nutritious options accessible to all students. Breakfast menus are available on the system's website and in cafeterias.

Student and parent input shapes menu planning. Elementary campuses feature Youth Advisory Committees (YAC) or Nutrition Advisory Committees (NAC) where students discuss menu options. Middle and high school students submit feedback online. Parents can engage during advisory board meetings, ensuring menus are healthy, culturally relevant, and appealing.

Beyond meal services, PPCSS promotes healthy eating in classrooms, adhering to Smart Snack standards for all food and beverages. Teachers encourage nutritious snacks from home. Information on healthy eating is available through the district website and other communication channels. Nutrition education is integrated into the school day via morning announcements, homeroom classes, bulletin boards, and physical education sessions.
