Hurricane Isaias intensified early Friday, churning through the Gulf of Mexico and prompting hurricane and storm surge warnings along portions of the northern Gulf Coast. As of the National Hurricane Center's 5 a.m. advisory, the storm was tracking north-northeast at 15 mph. Maximum sustained winds were near 90 mph, with weakening expected.

Data from Air Force and NOAA Hurricane Hunters indicated further strengthening was possible, and forecasters predicted Isaias could become a major hurricane, possibly a Category 3, before landfall. The National Hurricane Center advised residents to rush preparations to completion, stating, "the weather will go downhill quickly today." This means securing properties from Jupiter to Boca Raton.

The latest forecast projects the storm approaching the northern Gulf Coast Friday afternoon and making landfall within the hurricane warning area Friday night or early Saturday. Forecasters expect Isaias to remain a dangerous hurricane, though slight weakening is anticipated before landfall. A Hurricane Warning remains in effect from the Mississippi/Alabama border to the Bay/Gulf County line in Florida, where hurricane conditions are expected Friday night into early Saturday. Tropical storm conditions are forecast to begin later Friday.

A Storm Surge Warning extends from Dauphin Island, Alabama, to the Suwannee River in Florida. A Storm Surge Watch is in effect from the Suwannee River southward to Yankeetown. The National Hurricane Center warned of life-threatening coastal flooding and urged residents in vulnerable areas, such as Delray Beach or along the Intracoastal Waterway, to complete preparations and follow evacuation orders from local officials.

In addition to damaging winds and storm surge, Isaias is expected to bring heavy rainfall to the central Gulf Coast. Forecasters anticipate 4 to 8 inches of rain across southern Alabama, the Florida Panhandle, the Florida Big Bend and southwest Georgia, with isolated totals reaching 15 inches, particularly in rain bands over the Panhandle and Big Bend. Rainfall totals of 2 to 5 inches are expected across much of the remainder of the Southeast, with localized amounts up to 10 inches possible, especially across the southern Appalachians and coastal Carolinas. Flash and urban flooding are likely throughout the region, with considerable impacts possible across southern Alabama, the Florida Panhandle and southwestern Georgia. River flooding, some of which could be significant, is also expected.

A tornado risk begins late Friday afternoon and continues through the night in coastal areas of Alabama, the Florida Panhandle and far southwest Georgia. The tornado threat will persist Saturday across portions of eastern Alabama, the Florida Panhandle, Georgia and the Carolinas.

While Isaias is forecast to make landfall along the Gulf Coast, residents across Florida should continue monitoring forecasts. The storm is expected to be a significant rain producer, and its moisture could contribute to continued periods of heavy rain across portions of the state through the weekend, potentially impacting State Road 7 or the Turnpike.
