October is Italian American Heritage and Culture Month, honoring the history, traditions and contributions of people of Italian descent. This observance recognizes Italian Americans' impact on art, science, education, public service, business, sports, music, film and cuisine throughout the United States, including in areas around Lake Okeechobee.
Congress established Italian American Heritage and Culture Month in 1989, and President George H.W. Bush formally recognized it. The designation highlights the significant immigration wave of roughly four million Italians to the U.S. between 1880 and 1920. In Palm Beach County, 122,560 residents, or 8% of the population, identify with Italian ancestry.
The Pahokee Public Library encourages residents to explore Italian culture this month. Patrons can access language learning tools, trace family history with census, immigration and military records, read international newspapers and find books by Italian and Italian American authors, regional cookbooks and films.
A Pahokee Public Library card provides access to these resources for learning Italian, exploring history and immersing oneself in culture. Residents seeking specific Italian American Heritage events can visit the library's website or inquire at the circulation desk.
