Local author and researcher K. James will release a new book exploring Indonesian death metal. The book, Indonesian Death Metal and Indonesian Society, is scheduled for publication in September by Palgrave Macmillan.
James highlights the importance of regional scenes and bands, noting the Ujung Berung death metal scene as a significant incubator for talent. He specifically points to bands such as Jasad, Disinfected, Injected Sufferage, Jihad, Bleeding Corpse, Saffar, and Gore Infamous, along with younger generation band Pourriture.
The book also examines the social aspects of the music, including communal gathering spaces. James mentions the home of ex-Jasad drummer Dani 'Papap' Kadarusman in Ujung Berung as a well-known meeting spot that remains active.
The discussion around Indonesian death metal often involves the nuances between closely linked genres like grindcore. James acknowledges that some bands historically identified with grindcore have been categorized as death metal, and vice versa, due to fluid genre definitions.
Indonesian Death Metal and Indonesian Society aims to provide a comprehensive look at the genre's development within the Indonesian cultural context. The book is expected to be available through Palgrave Macmillan this month.
