Ottawa Gets $10,000 Grant for Trail Signage

Staff Writer
June 11, 2026

The City of Ottawa received a $10,000 Trail Stewards grant from Sunflower Foundation to add wayfinding signage, maps, and orientation materials to its trail system.

Ottawa was one of 25 Kansas communities selected for the foundation's Paving the Way program. The Trail Stewards grants, awarded to 12 communities statewide, fund trail maintenance, promotion, volunteer coordination, and amenities.

City Manager Thatcher Moddie said the trails connect residents to businesses, services, parks, schools, and neighborhoods. "We are grateful for the opportunity to enhance our trail system with wayfinding, maps, and trail orientation for our community members and visitors," he said.

Grant recipients will participate in a virtual learning series led by Michele Archie of The Harbinger Consultancy. Kansas Trails, Inc. will provide technical assistance to all grantees.

A complete list of Paving the Way grantees is available on the Sunflower Foundation website.
