A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Eastern Orleans Parish, including Lake Catherine, with potential for hazardous winds and life-threatening storm surge; residents should prepare immediately.
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Eastern Orleans Parish, specifically impacting Lake Catherine, as of 3:54 PM CDT today, October 7, by the National Weather Service (NWS) in New Orleans. Residents should act now to complete preparations before hazardous conditions arrive.
The NWS forecasts peak winds between 20-30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, with potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Property protection efforts should be underway, preparing for limited wind damage. This includes securing porches, awnings, carports, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes. Expect possible damage to large tree limbs and some power/communications outages.
Life-threatening storm surge is possible, with a potential for 3-5 feet of inundation above ground in surge-prone areas, especially around Venetian Isles and Lake Catherine. The window of concern for storm surge is Friday morning until Saturday morning. Residents are advised to assemble disaster supplies and know their evacuation routes. If evacuation orders are given for your area, leave immediately.
Rainfall is expected to be 1-3 inches, with locally higher amounts, but little to no potential for widespread flooding. Tornadoes are not expected. This Tropical Storm Watch is effective until 12:00 AM UTC on October 8. For more information and updates, visit gohsep.la.gov/emergency.
