OCPS Teachers Face Job Cuts Amid Enrollment Decline

Nearly 100 teachers and instructional staff in Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) could lose their jobs as the district faces declining student enrollment. The district confirmed Tuesday that 212 instructional positions were identified for reassignment based on current enrollment needs.

Of these positions, which include those held by teachers on Professional Service and Annual Contracts, most have been filled for the upcoming school year. However, 98 probationary employees remain without assignments. These displaced staff are primarily new hires.

Orange County Public Schools is working to place the affected teachers but currently has only about 20 vacancies. "The district remains committed to supporting affected employees throughout this process while ensuring that all classrooms are staffed with appropriately certified educators and that students continue to receive high-quality instruction," a district statement read.

The district has experienced significant enrollment declines over the past few years, impacting state funding. Earlier this month, OCPS announced a temporary hiring freeze after a drop of approximately 7,600 students from the previous year, a figure higher than anticipated. Factors contributing to the decline include lower birth rates, affordability challenges, and the expansion of taxpayer-funded vouchers.

The OCPS school board also recently approved budget cuts totaling millions of dollars for the upcoming school year.
