Florida Lightning Deaths: Expert Urges Caution After 6 Fatalities

Florida's storm season has prompted a lightning safety specialist to remind residents about the dangers of thunderstorms and urge increased vigilance. Six people have died from lightning strikes across the state this year. Meteorologist John Jensenius, with the National Lightning Safety Council, stressed the importance of understanding lightning's behavior and taking precautions.

Jensenius noted that lightning can strike miles from the main storm cloud, meaning the threat exists even before thunder sounds. He advises seeking substantial shelter, like a building with plumbing or a hard-top vehicle, at the first rumble of thunder. Inside, stay away from windows and doors and avoid contact with electrical equipment and corded phones.

The National Lightning Safety Council offers resources on its website for learning more about lightning safety. The council emphasizes that no outdoor location is completely safe.
