Orlando-area residents who filed claims related to a Cash App data and security breach are beginning to receive payments. Cash App and its parent company, Block Inc., agreed to a $15 million settlement to resolve allegations of security breaches and unauthorized access to customer information, affecting users from Winter Park to downtown Orlando.
Eligible users who experienced unauthorized or fraudulent withdrawals or transfers between Aug. 23, 2018, and Aug. 20, 2024, could file claims. The deadline to submit a claim was Nov. 18, 2024. The settlement aims to compensate users for out-of-pocket losses and provide other reimbursements across Orange County.
The lawsuit, Salinas, et al. v. Block, Inc. and Cash App Investing, LLC, alleged Cash App and Block were negligent in protecting user data. Claims involved an instance where a former Cash App Investing employee accessed account data without permission and a 2023 incident where unauthorized users accessed accounts using recycled phone numbers. Cash App and Block admitted no wrongdoing as part of the settlement.
Under the settlement terms, the $15 million covers legal fees, administrative costs and valid user claims. Eligible claimants could receive up to $2,500 for documented out-of-pocket losses. Payments are expected to distribute soon to those with approved claims.
