Hurricane Isaias strengthened to a Category 3 storm early Friday, October 9, 2026, with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph, the National Hurricane Center reported. This marks the first major hurricane of the Atlantic season.
An Air Force Reserve hurricane hunter aircraft confirmed the wind speed increase, solidifying Isaias's status as a major hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. The storm's eye formed late Thursday, October 8, 2026.
Forecasters project Isaias to make landfall between Gulf Shores, Alabama, and Destin, Florida. In preparation, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey ordered non-residents to evacuate several areas Thursday. Residents in coastal areas and low-lying neighborhoods, such as Meadow Lake, should monitor official advisories and prepare for potential impacts.
Rain has begun in the Florida Panhandle and southern Georgia. The National Hurricane Center forecasts intensify and northward movement as the storm approaches the coast, warning of heavy rain, flash flooding, urban flooding, and river flooding across the central U.S. Gulf Coast and much of the Southeast. These conditions could extend into Tennessee and North Carolina over the weekend.
