Red Flag Warning: High Fire Danger in Ontonagon and Gogebic Counties
A Red Flag Warning has been issued for Ontonagon and Gogebic Counties until 6:00 PM EDT today, October 11, due to high winds, low humidity, and dry fuels, creating dangerous wildland fire conditions, and outdoor burning is not recommended.
A Red Flag Warning is in effect for Ontonagon and Gogebic Counties until 6:00 PM EDT today, October 11, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Marquette MI. Residents are advised that critical fire weather conditions are present, and outdoor burning is not recommended.
The warning, issued at 2:20 AM EDT, highlights a combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and exceptionally dry fuels that will create dangerous wildland fire conditions. Winds are expected from the southwest at 5 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. Relative humidity could drop as low as 32 percent.
These conditions mean that any fire that develops will catch and spread quickly. The NWS emphasizes that campfires, outdoor grills, smoking materials, fireworks, chain saws, and all-terrain vehicles all have the potential to ignite a dangerous and destructive fire.
The affected areas are Fire Weather Zone 002 (Ontonagon) and Fire Weather Zone 009 (Gogebic). This warning is in effect until 6:00 PM EDT /5:00 PM CDT/ this evening. Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution and avoid any activities that could spark a fire.
