A Red Flag Warning has been issued for Ontonagon and Gogebic counties, effective from Saturday, October 10 at 12:00 PM EDT until Sunday, October 11 at 6:00 PM EDT. The National Weather Service in Marquette advises that critical fire weather conditions are expected during this period.
The warning is due to a combination of strong winds and low relative humidity. On Saturday, winds are predicted to be south at 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. On Sunday, winds will be south at 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. Relative humidity is expected to drop as low as 32 percent on both days.
These conditions create a high risk of dangerous and destructive wildfires. Any fire that develops will catch and spread quickly. Outdoor burning is not recommended. Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution with potential ignition sources, including campfires, outdoor grills, smoking materials, fireworks, chain saws, and all-terrain vehicles, as they can all throw a spark and ignite a fire.
