Beach Hazards: Dangerous Rip Currents at Crystal Coast Beaches Today
A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for Crystal Coast beaches today until 8 PM EDT due to dangerous rip currents and strong longshore currents. Swimmers should exercise extreme caution.
Residents and visitors to Crystal Coast beaches are advised of dangerous rip currents and strong longshore currents in the surf zone, effective immediately until 8 PM EDT this evening, October 10. The National Weather Service (NWS) Newport/Morehead City NC has issued a Beach Hazards Statement for West Carteret and Coastal Onslow areas.
Life-threatening rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Strong longshore currents will create dangerous swimming conditions, potentially sweeping swimmers and surfers into hazardous areas like piers and jetties. The NWS highlights that the most likely time for strong rip currents is a couple of hours around low tide, which is expected around 2:00 PM today.
If caught in a rip current, remain calm. Swim in a direction following the shoreline. If tired, float or tread water until out of the rip current. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
