Oldsmar Residents Exempt from Sales Tax on Hurricane Supplies
Oldsmar residents can permanently purchase a range of essential hurricane preparedness items without paying sales tax, thanks to a new state law that took effect earlier this year. The Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday has been replaced by a permanent exemption on specific safety and emergency supplies.
The permanent tax break covers batteries (AA-cell, AAA-cell, C-cell, D-cell, 6-volt and 9-volt), portable generators, and fire extinguishers. Safety devices such as smoke detectors, alarms, and carbon monoxide detectors also qualify. Insect repellent, sunscreen, life jackets and waterproof tarps up to 1,000 square feet are exempt.
Residents can also purchase ground anchor systems and tie-down kits, as well as gas or diesel fuel cans with a capacity of up to five gallons, without sales tax. These items help secure homes and property before severe weather strikes.
Several items previously covered by temporary sales tax holidays, including reusable ice packs, lanterns, flashlights, candles, portable power banks, non-electric food storage coolers, and pet supplies, are no longer included in the permanent exemption. The Florida Division of Emergency Management provides a comprehensive checklist of disaster supply items on its website.
The shift to a permanent tax exemption aims to encourage year-round preparedness among Florida residents by making it more affordable to stock necessary supplies before hurricane season.
