Extreme Storm Surge Warning Issued for Coastal Dixie, Act Immediately
Coastal Dixie, including Horseshoe Beach and Suwannee, is under an extreme Storm Surge Warning with potential for 3-5 feet of inundation; residents must shelter immediately and remain indoors.
A Storm Surge Warning has been issued for Coastal Dixie, including Horseshoe Beach and Suwannee, effective immediately until 1:30 PM UTC today, October 9. The National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee FL issued the warning at 5:17 AM EDT, indicating a life-threatening storm surge is possible, with potential for 3-5 feet of inundation above ground in surge-prone areas through Saturday morning.
Residents in these areas are advised to shelter against life-threatening storm surge. Flood preparations and ordered evacuations should be complete, and evacuees should be in shelters well away from storm surge flooding. Remain sheltered in a safe location and do not venture outside. Potential impacts from the main surge event are unfolding.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with an additional 2-4 inches of rain possible, and locally higher amounts. This could lead to moderate flooding, prompting evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings. The NWS also reports a favorable situation for a few tornadoes. If a tornado warning is issued, be ready to shelter quickly. Wind speeds are expected to remain below tropical storm force, with gusts up to 30 mph, posing little to no impact.
