URGENT: Life-Threatening Storm Surge and Winds for Okaloosa Coastal
A Storm Surge Warning is in effect for Okaloosa Coastal, including Destin, Eglin AFB, and Fort Walton Beach, with immediate threats of life-threatening storm surge, hurricane-force winds, and potential tornadoes, prompting urgent evacuation and sheltering actions.
A Storm Surge Warning has been issued for Okaloosa Coastal areas, including Destin, Eglin AFB, and Fort Walton Beach, effective immediately until 12:15 PM CDT today, October 8. The National Weather Service (NWS) Mobile, AL, warns of extreme and immediate threats to life and property.
Residents in surge-prone areas should prepare for life-threatening storm surge flooding potentially greater than 6 feet above ground. Evacuation efforts must be completed urgently. If evacuation orders are given for your area, leave immediately to avoid being cut off from emergency services. This storm surge is expected from Friday morning until Saturday morning.
Equivalent Tropical Storm force winds of 45-55 mph with gusts up to 65 mph are expected from Friday afternoon until early Saturday morning. There is a potential for winds of 74 to 110 mph, requiring immediate action to move to safe shelter. Extensive damage to buildings, large trees, and widespread power outages are anticipated. Consider protective actions if you are in a flood-vulnerable area due to projected rainfall of 4-8 inches, with locally higher amounts. The NWS also indicates a potential for several tornadoes; listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly.
